Writing a Summary: Taking Notes

When you summarize text, you record the main ideas in your own words. Look for the big ideas. It is good practice to take notes while actively re-reading a passage. This step will help prepare you to write your summary.

You can use Webspiration Classroom™ to help you take notes and write a summary. Open the Summary template and follow the steps below.
  1. Write the main idea of the passage in the center symbol. It should be brief and in your own words.
  2. In the first symbol, write 1–2 sentences that summarize the important points from the first supporting paragraph.
  3. Continue summarizing paragraphs into sentences, one per symbol, until you’ve captured the entire passage.
